- Vietnam Relic Zippo Lighter
C.1013
-
- This is a period copy of a Zippo lighter. Not to
be confused with today's cheap copies made for the tourists. This was
made during the Vietnam war for selling to the GI's on the black market
cheaper than they could buy from the PX.
- The brass used in their manufacture often
came from the empty artillery shells.
- Almost every soldier in Vietnam had a Zippo
because they
were reliable. It could run on a multitude
of fuels like alcohol and gasoline filled from the truck fuel tanks
whilst being dipped in on the end of a boot lace.
Some even kept salt in the bottom cavities
of their Zippos, to replenish lost
body salt. others were used to transmit
signals or even to act as
protection against enemy bullets.
The majority of combat soldiers rubbed back the chromed finish so
it did not reflect light that would attract enemy attention on the
battlefield
- Zippos were also
used in military operations, troopers would spray gasoline over
enemy compounds and dwellings and set them alight
with their trusty Zippo.
- The Zippo
lighter became the soldiers canvas on which
Vietnamese craftsmen
would engrave anything from pictures to phrases
to express their feelings, which it is why it is estimated that
there were over 200,000 original and locally made Zippos lighters in
existence during the Vietnam War.
It is no wonder the Vietnamese honestly thought they were
government issue!

Vietnam Sandals Made From Truck Tyres
C.1191
-
-
Rubber tyre sandals were used
extensively by the Viet Minh and Viet Cong during the
war in Vietnam
from the late 1940's until the fall of Saigon in 1979. In the face
of equipment shortages the guerilla army
of Vietnam turned to using old truck tyres as footwear and quickly
saw the advantages of the resulting sandals compared to boots. The
climate of jungle-Southeast Asia is harsh. During the war many
American infantrymen suffered from "trench-foot" or fungal
infections which resulted from wearing boots in the humid climate.
Many looked with envy to the sandals worn by the enemy. Tragically,
this footwear is also widely associated with the genocidal Khmer
Rouge regime which ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. Only the upper
cadre of the Khmer Rouge wore these sandals and it was a sign of
political power within the regime. They were seen as a good example
of self-sufficiency and were very practical.
